Mentor and Faculty Application Process

Pediatricians who are certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in child abuse pediatrics and who practice in a child-friendly setting, such as a Child Advocacy Center, that offers several patient appointments during a day so as to provide observership learning opportunities for medical professionals can apply to become CHAMP Mentors.

Physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants who work with a CHAMP Mentor and have training and experience in providing child sexual abuse evaluations can apply to become CHAMP Faculty.

The CHAMP Mentor application process has these steps:

  1. Submit a Mentor application along with a current CV.
  2. Submit 3 letters of reference, with one being from a current or most recent supervisor.
  3. Submit documentation of American Board of Pediatrics certification for child abuse pediatrics.
  4. You will need to submit five of your most recent child sexual abuse cases for review by CHAMP Mentors. The review requires submitting photographic documentation as well as written information. The case review forms do not contain information that identifies the physician or the patient. Your cases will be reviewed by CHAMP Mentors. After you submit your application and supporting materials, JoAnne Race, CHAMP Program Manager, will send you the case review forms.
  5. After your cases have been reviewed, JoAnne will forward all of your materials to the Application Committee of the CHAMP Advisory Board for consideration.
  6. If you have not already taken the online CHAMP course Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse, you will asked to take it in order to become familiar with it. The course is a requirement for medical professionals seeking an observership.
If you are approved to become a Mentor, you will be partnered with an experienced Mentor who will give you an orientation to providing observerships and reviewing cases. After this orientation, you will be listed on the Roster of CHAMP Mentors and Faculty and your facility will be listed as a CHAMP Center of Excellence on the CHAMP website www.CHAMPprogram.com.

The CHAMP Faculty application process has these steps:

  1. Submit a Faculty application along with a current CV.
  2. Submit 3 letters of reference, with one being from the CHAMP Mentor you work with.
  3. You will need to submit five of your most recent child sexual abuse cases for review by CHAMP Mentors other than the Mentor you work with. The review requires submitting photographic documentation as well as written information. The case review forms do not contain information that identifies the physician or the patient. After you submit your application and supporting materials, JoAnne Race, CHAMP Program Manager, will send you the case review forms.
  4. After your cases have been reviewed, JoAnne will forward all of your materials to the Application Committee of the CHAMP Advisory Board for consideration.
  5. If you have not already taken the online CHAMP course Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse, you will asked to take it in order to become familiar with it. The course is a requirement for medical professionals seeking an observership.
If you are approved to become Faculty, you will receive information about serving as CHAMP Faculty and be listed on the Roster of CHAMP Mentors and Faculty, which is posted on the CHAMP website www.CHAMPprogram.com .
