Trafficking

CHAMP is adding this Child Victims of Human Trafficking feature in order to support New York State pediatric medical providers and facilities. This section offers education and resources related to the requirements of amendment 2805-y to the public health law. This amendment pertains to the identification and assessment of human trafficking victims. It also requires that facilities establish and implement written policies and procedures and provide ongoing training for all facility personnel.

Currently, this section has four content areas:

Dana Kaplan, MD, a board certified child abuse pediatrician and CHAMP Mentor, developed this Child Victims of Human Trafficking feature. She is the Director of Child Abuse and Neglect at Staten Island University Hospital, Director of the STAND (sex trafficking, abuse, neglect, domestic violence) Clinic, and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell. In addition, she is the Medical Director for the Staten Island Child Advocacy Center. She is also the Associate Program Director for the Pediatrics Residency Training Program at Staten Island University Hospital.

Dr. Kaplan has interest and expertise in the subject of child trafficking. She speaks regionally and nationally on the topic of human trafficking and is currently involved in many efforts across New York to educate healthcare providers on the topic of human trafficking.
